CELEBRATING LIFE AFLOAT AND ASHORE

Not all voyages in the same region will provide the same experience. Many cruise lines offer theme cruises which focus on a cultural or culinary area that enhances your understanding and enjoyment of your vacation. Often, theme cruises are offered during off-season travel times so you’ll find that there is little or no premium pricing for the added experience. If the theme of a cruise is of great interest to you, then you can be assured of finding like-minded travelers with whom you will already have a base for lifelong friendships. While there are many types of theme cruises, by far the most popular are wine, holiday markets and cuisine.

WINE CRUISES

Wine cruises are available on both river cruises and deep-water voyages, but we have found that the river cruises usually add that extra touch. While oceans may skirt the edge of a wine growing region, river cruises sail through the heart of oenophiles’ paradise. Imagine touring quaint wineries along rivers such as the romantic Rhine, serene Seine, blue Danube or dramatic Columbia. Be part of a small group who explores a 16th century wine cellar and witness the wine-making process with the winery owner. Then retire to an estate that has been in the family for centuries for a curated wine tasting bathed in candlelight and led by the owner’s family.

Try a sweet, refined Riesling in Austria, a bold Müller-Thurgau in Germany, a peppery Grenache in Washington State and a fruity Pinot Noir or crisp, dry Chardonnay in France. Aboard ship, your wine hosts, renowned experts in the art and nuances of winemaking, will lead you through additional tastings and created specialized wine pairings with your dinner that night. Sit with them as the sun sets over the terraced wineries lining the river and soak in their knowledge while sharing stories of that “perfect glass” of wine that changed your life.

Along the Mississippi River, there are wine cruises celebrating the vintner’s gifts in states such as Missouri, but the real treats are the bourbon theme cruises touching at ports in Kentucky and Tennessee along the Ohio and Tennessee rivers.  Go behind the scenes of distilleries in operation for generations and learn the characteristics of the bourbons from each location and discover how to infuse bourbon into your everyday recipes.

insidertip

Become friends with your wine hosts. They’re not only lovely people but are often happy to share a bottle from their own winery and are eager to point you toward charming wine bars off the beaten path in your ports of call.

HOLIDAY MARKETS

There are few experiences more joyous, more full of life and more colorful than a cruise along the Rhine or Danube during the holidays. In quaint towns and refined cities, you will find an array of Christmas markets, a European tradition that infuses each destination with the spirit of the holidays. Located in prominent parks, city squares or sometimes outside the gates of castles, Christmas markets are filled with gaily decorated stalls filled not just with one-of-a-kind gifts but also local food and drink. Best of all, although the markets draw their fair share of tourists, they are a favorite spot for locals to immerse themselves in the spirit of the season.

Share a hot mug of traditional mulled wine called glühwein with an Austrian and learn more about their land from a native’s perspective. Pop by a booth selling hand-carved egg shell ornaments, then try a slice of black forest cake with a friendly German. Sample a chocolate-laden linzer torte, a delicate dominostein, a cup of warm almonds coated in crunchy brown sugar, or tackle the best apple strudel you’ve ever tasted. Don’t leave without savoring a stein of the local beer and a fresh soft pretzel so large that you’re happy to share it with your new friends.

insidertip

The best time to enjoy holiday markets is from the first week of December through Christmas. While about half of the markets along the Rhine and Danube are open the week of Thanksgiving, the rest don’t open until a week or two later.

CULINARY CRUISES

If you’re a foodie, then you’ve come to the right place. Whether a river cruise or an oceangoing adventure, cruises that celebrate the culinary arts are a flight of fancy for your taste buds. Learn the variety of cuisines in each region in which you sail and savor the glorious results of the chef’s handiwork.

Join a shore excursion where you accompany the ship’s chef to local farmer’s markets to select vegetables, fruits, and tender meats before returning to the ship and trying your hand at cooking alongside a famed expert. Go on a progressive dinner through the hidden culinary gems of a small river town led by a local. Or simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the special treats reflecting the region in which you’re sailing presented with passion and panache in the ship’s dining room.

insidertip

If you love interesting cuisine, you’re likely a member of a food and wine group. For the best cruise pricing, invite your entire group to sail with you. We’re happy to help you with the details and arrange special amenities such as a special cocktail party or chef’s table treat.
