There’s big news from the expedition cruising arm of legendary Norwegian coastal operator Hurtigruten. They’ve signed an agreement with the Kleven Shipyard for the construction of up to four new explorer ships. The first vessel is to be completed the summer of 2018. We’re excited not just because I’m part Norwegian, but because this is the largest investment in Hurtigruten’s more than 120-year history. It is a milestone for the Norwegian travel industry and the Norwegian shipyard industry. I have no doubt they will build the most formidable expedition ships in the world. The agreement ensures Hurtigruten’s position as world leading within adventure tourism in the Arctic and in Antarctica. The agreement includes the construction of two new Hurtigruten vessels designed for exploring polar waters and an option for the construction further two explorer ships.
The ships are designed and developed by Rolls-Royce with the assistance of the renowned Norwegian ship designer Espen Øino. The ships are customized for adventure-rich expedition voyages and can also operate on the Norwegian cost.
